Preparing for the ACT or SAT

STRESS-your heart pounds, your head spins, you breathe faster, and beads of sweat drip from your head- at the very thought of test day. I have some very good news. This doesn’t have to be your story with the right tools and strategies in place early. With the college admissions process growing more competitive as the ACT and SAT change and become more challenging, students should be armed early to prevent the physical response that stress brings. Fortunately, these tests are coachable, and early preparation can lower and even alleviate stress and increase test scores. We are going to share test prep strategies for you to choose that will lower stress levels for you and your student and get them the best test score possible.

For starters, you must understand your child’s learning style and the amount you want to spend with this process.

1. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE

Just as there is a church on every corner, there’s countless free websites that offer free practice test. Khan Academy offers free SAT practice test and tutorials. ACT.org offers four practice ACT tests and several practice questions. Additionally, they also offer SAT test. The great thing about both is that they provide answer keys for each test. Resources of this nature provide a good comparison of what the actual test format will be.

2. START A TEST LIBRARY

Visit your local school supply store to pick up inexpensive test prep books to become familiar with test, testing structure, and question format, and set-up. Some books also share test-taking strategies, provide reasons for why an answer is correct, and provide answer keys- you know for those challenging questions. You can also find these books at your local library. However, remember that books from the library can’t be written in.

3. ONLINE TEST

Are you always on the go? Purchasing books are just not an option? Or, you can’t get to the library. No worries. You can jump online to complete drills, segments, or even a complete test depending on the commute. Online tests are resourceful and effective as they target your student’s strengths and weaknesses saving time targeting subjects that are challenging. With this options, you can select free or paid test.

4. CLASS SESSIONS

Motivation and Accountability at its greatest. Face-to-face time with an instructor keeps your student focused, organized, on track, and accountable for their learning. Depending on the class, some guarantee improved or perfect test scores with each test taken.

5. PRIVATE TUTOR

Hiring a private tutor can be beneficial to help your child manage test anxiety, strategies for working around a calculator, target specific content areas, and question types. Private tutoring is extremely flexible with options like one-on-one, online, or group tutoring sessions.
